Always remove inedible objects (such as cake toppers, flowers, etc.) from the cake first! If it is a tiered cake, remove the top layer first, cut, then work your way down. Each tier will be on its own cake board and there will usually be supports in the layer below.

 

For cutting: I would suggest making a horizontal cut about 2 inches from the edge. Transfer to a cutting board or flat surface and slice into large rectangular slices. No judgment here on how big your cake slices are but the above image is a guide to getting the most servings out of your cake!
